Getting around Anguilla

Getting around Anguilla Located at the northernmost end of the British Leeward Islands, the small tropical paradise of Anguilla makes for a superb vacation escape. One of the most amazing features of this island is that though it has now become a getaway for the rich with expensive villas and luxury resorts, it still has an air of natural peace and calm. This tranquility, along with the 33 stunning white sand beaches found here make Anguilla, among the most coveted vacation spots in the world today.

An Overseas British Territory, this tiny island is just 16 miles long and 3 miles wide at its broadest point. With a total land area of less than 95 sq. km, nothing is too far away to get to. And with a flat open terrain, it is easy to move from one place to another. Effortless to explore by yourself, touring Anguilla on your own can be plenty of fun, as it lets you get up close and personal with the warm and friendly population here.

A great way to discover this island and its hidden secrets is to hire a rental car and drive around. Do be careful though as all the roads are not well paved. However, don’t let this deter you as there is always a beautiful beach, delicious food stall or a breathtaking view just around the corner. Remember to drive on the left side of the road, and be sure to carry your valid driver’s license. Several car rental agencies on the island also can issue a 3-month valid license. Aside from Avis, other reliable car rental companies in Anguilla include; Connor’s Car Rental, Island Car Rentals, and Caribbean Rentals Ltd.

If you prefer not to drive, you can always rent a taxi and see the island. A great idea is to take a taxi tour of Anguilla, which lasts about two and a half hours. Costing around US$ 40, this cab ride lets you see the island through the eyes of the native cabbies. Not only will your taxi pick you up from your hotel, but at the end of the tour it will also drop you back as well. You can find plenty of taxis outside the airport, but most hotels usually arrange free pick and drop taxi services. If you hire a cab for more than a day you are also liable to get a discounted fare.

Keep in mind that there is no public transportation on the island whatsoever aside from taxis. Easily available, you can catch a taxi almost anywhere. There is one bus service on Anguilla, but it is for touring purposes only. Harry’s Taxi and Tour Bus Service is perfect to charter if you are traveling in a big group of say 15 or more people.

If you are a little more adventurous, hire a bike or scooter to sightsee, while if you are touring with your family, renting a four-wheel drive is a good option. Those who wish to make a day trip to Sint Maarten for some excellent duty free shopping can do so via a ferry service that runs from Blowing Point to Marigot. You must carry you passport if you wish to visit Sint Maarten.
