Fishing in the Bahamas
Whether you are an avid angler or just looking for some downtime to
getaway and relax, fishing in the Bahamas is really something special.
With a huge diversity of fish species found just off the coast, the
Bahamas today is considered as one of the premier fishing destinations
on the planet. From big game fish to the more smaller varieties, you
can find nearly every kind of fish out here!
Credited with over 50 fishing records it is no wonder then that
the Bahamas is considered to be so angler friendly. From bonefishing
to trolling, sportfishing or deep sea fishing, this Caribbean nation
has it all. However, conscious of its responsibility to protect
its marine heritage, spear fishing is strictly prohibited in the
Bahamas. Only a ‘Hawaiian sling’ is allowed.
Some of the best fishing in the Bahamas has to be found in Bimini,
the world’s big game fishing capital. This tiny island hosts
some great fishing tournaments throughout the year. In Bimini, you
can catch quite a few fish including swordfish, tuna, marlin, tarpon
and sailfish in good numbers. There is even a fishing ‘hall
of fame’ here where all the record holders are honored. This
island is also known as Earnest Hemmingway’s home, who was
an ardent fisherman himself.
For the more daring and keen anglers, bonefishing is a must try off
the Andros Island coast. Wily creatures, bone fish are found in shallow
waters and put up quite a good resistance when hooked. Good fishing
can also be found near Grand Bahama and Exuma. Here marlin, wahoo,
sailfish, snapper and grouper can be found in huge numbers. Nassau
offers plenty of deep sea and reef fishing opportunities, while the
Grand Bahama Island is noted for its reef fishing.
Charter a boat either by yourself or with a group of friends and
head out into the open waters to catch a bite. You can now even
go on a fishing tour of the Bahamas with many travel companies arranging
for experienced local guides to show you the best spots to fish
at. There are a number of fishing lodges here which are great especially
if you are a first time fisher.
