Getting Around the Bahamas
The Bahamas is a great place to vacation in. A flawless escape with
its picture perfect beaches, tranquil waters and distinctive charm,
this island nation is a must visit for those who are looking to kickback
and have a good time. Made up of some 700 islands and over 2000 cays,
the Bahamas is spread out roughly over an area of 1206 km in the Atlantic
Ocean. Easily accessible from the mainland US, getting to the Bahamas
is a breeze with all major carriers landing here.
Getting around the Bahamas is pretty easy as well, especially if
you are in the mood to island hop and explore the entire country.
Most of the islands here are linked by ferry and boat services.
However, if you wish to travel in style, you can catch inter-island
flights to those islands which have an airport or landing strip.
Helicopter tours are also on hand offering stunning views and fantastic
vistas. On the islands themselves, buses and taxis are available
to get around which are reliable as well as economical.
The cheapest way to travel between islands has to be by ferry.
There is a Fast Ferry service between the major islands, with water
taxis and smaller ferries serving as rides to the ‘Out Islands.’
Ferries are a common way to get around with many locals using them
as well. The inter-island mailboats are also a great way to travel,
with rides lasting anywhere between 5 to 24 hours. These boats are
slow and steady, but let you truly take in the spirit of the Bahamas.
You may also sail between islands yourself by either renting out
a boat with or without a full service crew, from Nassau or Freeport.
If you are the adventurous type, then rent a bicycle and take in most
of the islands at your own pace. There are many bicycle rental shops
all over the Bahamas that lease out bikes as well as other riding
gear. If you prefer to travel around by car or motor scooter, many
car rental companies are also on hand. You may use your own valid
driver’s license here for around 3 months, after which you need
to apply for an international driver’s license from the local
PD. Remember, driving here is on the left side of the road. Most car
rental offices can be found at the airport and in most major hotels.
If you are traveling on a budget, then take the Jitney or local
bus service to get around. Buses run in Nassau and Freeport from
early in the morning to roughly 7:00 pm and your fare will depend
on your route. If you want you can also hail a cab. Taxis can be
found on even the smaller islands and usually take you anywhere.
Since they are licensed, fares are set by the government, with fixed
fares to the airport and other major tourist destinations. Look
for the Bahamahost sticker on your taxi window.
