Places to See in the Bahamas

Places to See in the Bahamas Vacationing in the Bahamas is a wonderful way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Here the pace of life is slow with a charm and vibrancy that is truly unique. With some 700 islands that make up the Bahamas, there are plenty of places to see and experience in this tiny island nation of the Caribbean.

The island of New Providence is perhaps the most visited island in the Bahamas. Though small in size, this island is very important as it is home to the capital, Nassau. A colonial city with many remnants of British rule, Nassau today is a tourist hub with its many resorts, hotels, casinos, shopping malls, markets, bars and clubs located here.

Take in the historic architecture of the city or visit the many markets in town. The Straw Market on Bay Street is one of the largest in the world, selling everything from straw hats to dolls and other straw goods. Potter’s Cay Market near the Paradise Island Bridge also offers some wonderful bargains for the avid shopper. If you enjoy visiting museums then do take a trip to the Nassau Public Library and Museum. The Pirates of Nassau Museum in downtown Nassau is a treat for kids as well as adults.

Visit Arawak Cay to see how the locals enjoy their lunches, while if you just want to chill out then head down to the ever popular and bustling Cable Beach. Paradise Island, just off the coast plays host to the incredible Atlantis Resort, a burgeoning mega-resort. And if you do have the time, do drop into the Bacardi Rum Factory for a free tour of the premises.

On the island of Grand Bahamas, the most important place to see has to be the amazing Lucayan National Park. With the world’s longest underwater cave system, this park is a treat for kids and grownups alike. Also worth visiting here is the International Bazaar and the Port Lucaya Marketplace and Marina for some good shopping. The Peterson Cay National Park on the island’s southern shores is a great place for a family picnic.

While in the Bahamas, a visit to the island of Biminis is a must as Earnest Hemmingway used to live here. Have a drink at the famous Compleat Angler Hotel and Bar, and don’t forget to try your luck at fishing. The sports fishing here is among the best on the planet, with many big game fisherman coming here to try and catch a bite.

For a more quiet vacation visit Long Island, one of the most scenic islands in the Bahamas, or take a trip to Andros Island with its huge mangrove wetlands and many bird watching opportunities.
