Getting Around Barbados

Getting Around Barbados With a tropical ambiance and laidback lifestyle, Barbados is definitely the place to vacation in especially if you are looking for somewhere to chill out and relax. Barbadian’s or Bajan’s as they like to be known, are a warm and friendly bunch, who welcome visitors with open arms and bright smiles. Getting to Barbados is rather easy with most major airlines landing here. You can even get here by cruise ship or boat as part of a Caribbean Islands tour.

Getting around Barbados is quite straightforward actually as the official language spoken here is English. The public transport system on this tiny island is first class, with the bus network here fast, cheap and efficient. Extensively covering most parts of the island, the buses on Barbados will take you almost any place you need to get to.

There are three kinds of buses which run on the island. The first kind are government operated blue buses that go anywhere, while the second kind are private minibuses which are yellow in color. The third kind of buses are actually minivans or route taxis, which are white in color and have the alphabets ZR on their license plates. These buses usually travel shorter more traversed distances. All these 3 buses charge the same fare to get to any place on the island i.e. B$ 1.50.

If traveling by bus is not your thing then you can always hail a cab to get to anywhere. Taxis here have a ‘Z’ on their license plates and are usually easy to find. Here, fares are fixed by the government. However, sometimes you may find yourself haggling for a reasonable fare.

If you like, you can also rent a car, a moped or a bike/scooter to get around Barbados. Easy to find, most car/bike rental companies on the island have no international rental affiliations, but are reliable and ideal if you wish to travel off the beaten path. Most car rental offices can be found at the airport or in major hotels and usually lease out cars for a reasonable price. If you are looking for a more fun way to travel, you can also rent a ‘moke’. These small buggies are an enjoyable way to get around and see the sights.

While driving in Barbados remember to keep to the left side of the road. Temporary driving licenses are required to drive on the island and can be obtained from any car rental agency.
