Getting Around Bonaire
A utopian paradise, Bonaire is the perfect spot to vacation in for
those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. This laidback
and easy going island offers a marvelous and relaxing getaway for
those who want nothing more than to sit back and bask in the sun in the Caribbean.
A small island in terms of land area, getting around Bonaire is
quite easy. However, do keep in mind that no public transportation
runs on the island. The best way to explore Bonaire is on your own
by car. And with most of the tourist stops located in and around
Kralendijk, the capital, exploring the island is not too difficult
by yourself. One can tour the whole of Bonaire by car in just 2
days!
If you are here on a diving tour, then you will have no problem
getting around as most dive operators and tour companies will take
you wherever you need to go. However, if you are here on your own
and wish to explore the island, then a car rental is your best option.
You will probably need to rent a four-wheel drive if you are here
between the months of October and January, as it is rainy season
and the roads get quite muddy. Avis has a rental office here in
Bonaire along with a number of other international rental firms.
You can find a car rental company office at the airport or in Kralendijk.
To drive in Bonaire, you need a valid US, UK or Canadian driver’s
license. Also remember that here you drive on the right side of
the road.
For the more adventurous, rent a bicycle or a scooter to see Bonaire
as the terrain here is rather flat and easy to navigate. If you are
renting a bike, you should be in relatively good physical shape as
you have to often contend with hot sunny days and strong winds from
time to time.
For those who have a limited travel budget, or who are only on
the island for a few days, taxis are a good option. Found near the
airport and around Kralendijk, most taxis will take you any place
you need to get to. And while the taxis are not metered out here,
a fixed fare is set by the government from one stop to the next.
However, if you are traveling at night or after 12 am, fares can
sometimes go as high as 50%!
