Small and idyllic, Bonaire is an amazing retreat for those looking
to escape the humdrum of daily life. This tiny island of just 110
sq miles has plenty of places to see and explore to keep you busy
for quite some time. It is almost impossible to get lost out here,
and armed with a good map you can navigate your way easily around
the island with no problem at all.
Kralendijk the capital and main town on the island is where everything
happens. The hub of Bonaire, this delightful town has a picturesque
waterfront which offers a great stroll in the evening. There are
several restaurants and bars located here as well as a number of
shops. There are two museums in town, one of which has a good display
of vintage picture, while the Bonaire Museum has many traditional
displays. Another site worth visiting in Kralendijk is Fort Oranje,
a small fortress built by the Dutch.
Some 14 miles north of the capital is the tiny town of Rincon,
also the oldest settlement on the island. Built in a secluded area
so as to keep away pirates, most of the resident here are descendents
from slaves. Make sure to visit the Kas Krioyo Rincon Museum and
the Marshe de Rincon market while here.
Close to the town of Rincon in the north is the Washington Slagbaai
National Park, a nature preserve that covers almost 20% of Bonaire.
The terrain here is that of a tropical desert, which plays host to
many of the bird species found on the island. Be on the lookout for
pink flamingoes here as well as goats, lizards, iguanas and parrots.
This park also offers some great hiking opportunities and horseback
riding.
Another must visit place while in Bonaire is Klein Bonaire, a small
islet just off the coast. The perfect place for a picnic, this isle
has some wonderful diving and snorkeling sites.
