Things to do in Bonaire

Things to do in Bonaire One of the smaller Caribbean islands, Bonaire still has plenty of active pursuits for the gung ho traveler. The shopping here is quite good, and the nightlife is pretty lively as well. With a number of fine dining establishments, clubs and bars found in and around the capital Kralendijk, there is plenty to keep one busy in Bonaire after the sun goes down.

Rated as one of the best diving spots in the world, this tiny West Indian nation is renowned for its excellent scuba diving and snorkeling adventures. The ideal place for novice divers as well as experts, diving here opens up a whole new world down under for many. A coral reef itself, some of the best dive spots on Bonaire are on the island’s western and southern coasts. Home to a plethora of marine plant and animal life, Bonaire also has fantastic underwater visibility making diving and snorkeling here a true pleasure. With the entire island’s coast declared a marine sanctuary, Bonaire is keen on keeping its title as a diver’s paradise for a long time to come.

Some other water based activities that you can enjoy on Bonaire include sailing, fishing, sea kayaking and windsurfing. Fishing from the shore is not allowed. However, you can find loads of fish species just off the coast. Wahoo, tuna, marlin, amberjack, snapper and grouper are just some of the many fish found in the area. The sailing in Bonaire is also pretty good with full-day and half-day boat charter tours available around the island. Windsurfing conditions are ideal in Lac Bay, with surfers from all across the globe coming here. If you enjoy sea kayaking, come to Lac Bay as well. With a mangrove forest also found out here, kayaking in this protected bay is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

Hiking, bicycling tennis and bird watching are also popular activities on Bonaire. With over 200 bird species found on the island, including flamingos, bird watching here is a terrific experience for birding enthusiasts. There is even a donkey sanctuary on Bonaire, which looks after the many wild donkeys that can be found all over the island.
