British Virgin Islands



British Virgin Islands An overseas British territory, the British Virgin Islands is a collection of 60 odd islands each with its own distinct traits and characteristics. If Tortola, home to the capital Road Town, is known for its lovely mountains and plethora of activities, Virgin Gorda offers travelers secluded resorts and sun-kissed beaches to enjoy. The tiny island of Jost Van Dyke is a wonderful place to kick back and relax; while the coral atoll of Anegada is known for its pretty beaches, rare birds, iguanas and wild goats. Peter and Necker Islands are home to the posh and luxurious resorts, while The Dogs is a sanctuary for many birds and marine life here, offering tourist some excellent scuba diving opportunities as well.

Encompassing a total area of 153 sq km, the British Virgin Islands is famous for is amazing sailing. A balmy climate all year round, along with consistent trade winds and a lack of strong tides makes sailing here a pure joy. And with several anchorages in the area, sailing in the British Virgin Islands is easy as apple pie.


Once a haven for pirates and buccaneers with its tiny bays and hidden coves; today these islands offer some wonderful cruising and island hopping adventures. Offering much to see and plenty to do, here you will never get bored. All of the towns are colorful in their own right and offer a wonderful escape from the other more touristy islands in the Caribbean. The people here are warm and friendly and the pace of life is laidback and stress-free.

First discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second journey to the Caribbean, today the British Virgin Islands is one of the most stable countries in the West Indies. Life here is chilled and peaceful, however there is till much to see and explore. The diving and snorkeling here are wonderful with some excellent conditions for surfing and windsurfing as well. For the avid surfer, head to Tortola’s northern coast to catch some awesome swells.

Most of the accommodation on the British Virgin Islands are located in Tortola, with Virgin Gorda the ideal place if you are looking for a seclude retreat. For those with plenty of money to spend, Peter Island is home to the luxurious Peter Island Resort, while Necker Island offers one of the world’s most luxurious retreats. This island is the private estate of Sir Richard Branson.
