Getting Around the British Virgin Islands

Getting Around the British Virgin Islands A wonderful place to go island hopping, the British Virgin Islands offers a unique blend of Caribbean culture and British sensibility. A treat to visit, here you will never find a dull day as there are numerous ways to keep yourself busy and engaged. Each island offers its own unique ambiance and activities, making every island worth visiting and a special place to enjoy.

Getting to the British Virgin Islands is easy as all you will need is a valid passport and a return ticket to enter the country. There are no international flights to the British Virgin Islands; however, many Caribbean airlines fly here including Air St. Thomas, Air Sunshine, American Eagle, and Cape Air. You can also come via cruise ship and spend a few days. Many cruise liners dock at Road Town’s harbor. Another easy way to get to the British Virgin Islands is by ferry from St. Thomas or St. John.

Once you are in the British Virgin Islands, getting around here is pretty much straightforward. The best way to see and enjoy the many islands here is by boat, which is both frequent and affordable. The ferry services here are easy to use and visit nearly all of the islands. The North Sound Express runs between Beef Island and Virgin Gorda, while Speedy’s and Smith’s Ferry Service cater to people traveling between Virgin Gorda and Tortola. To get to Jost Van Dyke, the New Horizon Ferry Service leaves from the West End on Tortola to the Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke.

To get around each iladn the best way to do so is to rent a car, although some islands are so small that you can roam around on foot and explore them in a couple of days. Driving here can however, get a little crazy as chickens, goats and stray dogs are often known to wander across the roads. There are several local car rental agencies in the British Virgin Islands from where you can rent a vehicle. Do keep in mind though that all drivers here must pay for a temporary driver’s license, which costs around US$ 10.

Taxis are also convenient to use if you are here only for a few days. Contact the BVI Taxi Association to rent a cab.
