Getting Around the Cayman Islands

Getting Around the Cayman Islands To get to the Cayman Islands no visa is needed for citizens of the US, Canada, the UK and most Commonwealth nations. You are however, required to carry with you a valid passport and a return or onward ticket. The main airport in the Cayman Islands is the Owen Roberts International Airport located some 2 km east of George Town. There is an airport on Cayman Brac as well, the Gerrard Smith International Airport, while the island of Little Cayman is served by the Edward Bodden Airfield. Many international and regional airlines fly to the Cayman Islands including American Airlines, Air Canada, British Airways, Air Jamaica and Cayman Airways.

The Cayman Islands is also an important cruise ship destination, which means that everyday of the week you will find cruise ships unloading passengers here for a few hours of sightseeing and some good duty free shopping. Most of the cruises are from the US, making George Town key stopover on the cruise map. If you want you can also sail to the Cayman Islands by yacht, however, you will need to stop in George Town first to clear immigration and customs.

The best way to get around the Cayman Islands is by air with regular daily flights from Grand Cayman to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. There are two domestic airlines operating here; Cayman Airways and Island Air. If you have the time, you can also take a ferry ride to each island.

Grand Cayman is the only island with any significant public transport infrastructure. You will find minibuses running all over the island and serving eight routes. There are no bus services available on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The best way to explore each of the Cayman Islands is by renting a car. Pretty affordable, driving here is wonderful as there is very little traffic and the roads here are quite good. On Cayman Brac and Little Cayman you need to consider renting a 4WD.

Driving here is on the left side of the road and you need to be at least 21 to rent a car.
