Places to See in the Cayman Islands

Cayman Islands Covering a total land area of just 259 sq km, the Cayman Islands are a wonderful vacation destination for all to enjoy in the Caribbean. And while much of the country’s incredible beauty lies underwater, there are still plenty of places to see and discover in this island paradise. The capital George Town is the first stop on your tour of the islands and is a cosmopolitan city, with so many banking institutions having their offices here. A compact town that is home to roughly half of the country’s total population, this city is known for its lovely traditional wooden buildings and excellent duty free shopping.

One of the must see places in George Town is the Cayman National Museum, which sits in the oldest building in the city. This museum contains various interesting exhibits and many old artifacts. Also worth seeing is the Elmslie Memorial Church, whose roof resembles a ship hull and the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands.

Outside George Town to the north is West Bay, where you can visit the Cayman Turtle Farm. This farm is unique in the fact that is raises green sea turtles from hatchling to adulthood. This farm so far has raised over 30,000 hatchlings. While you are here don’t forget to visit the town of Hell. A small community, this town is fun to visit for its ‘hellish’ appeal.

Another town worth visiting on Grand Cayman is Bodden Town for its imposing Pedro Saint James hose. Built in 1780 this building over the years has served as a jail, courthouse and parliament before eventually becoming a museum.

East End is a prime destination for nature enthusiasts on Grand Cayman and is home to the lovely Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. Although this park was quite badly damaged when Hurricane Ivan swept through the region a few years back, here you can still find many lovely gardens as well as see some of the Cayman’s native animal species.

On Cayman Brac, the National Trust Parrot Reserve and the Cayman Brac Museum are the only places to see on the island, while on Little Cayman the Booby Pond Nature Reserve is also worth visiting as well.
