Getting Around Grenada
Most western nationals do not require a visa to visit Grenada; however, all visitors here should carry a valid passport. Point Salinas International Airport is the only airport in the country and lies in the south of the island near True Blue Bay. A small airport, you will find an ATM and payphones here as well as a restaurant and car rental offices. Only a handful of international airlines offer direct flights to Grenada. American Airlines, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air Jamaica, LIAT and BWIA are among the few international and regional carriers to land here.
A main port of call for cruise ships, you can also get to Grenada by boat. If you are in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, you can take a quick ferry ride between Union Island and Carriacou. Private yachts may anchor in Grenada only after clearing customs and immigrations at the Spice Island Marine Services in Prickly Bay or at the Grenada Yacht Services in St George’s.
Once you are in Grenada, getting around the island is quite easy by bus. Privately operated minivans, these buses are a great way to mingle with the locals and get a real feel for what Grenada is all about. Buses run to most parts of the island and for bus schedules check the terminal in St George’s and the in the town of Hillsborough in Carriacou. Taxis are also available for hire, but are a bit expensive to use.
One of the best ways to get around the islands in Grenada is to travel by car. There are several car rental agencies on Grenada Island with a few rental companies also located in Carriacou. Driving here is on the left hand side of the road, but do be careful as the roads here are quite curvy. To dive on Grenada you will need to purchase a Grenadian driving license.
