Port-au-Prince



Port-au-Prince, Haiti

The bustling city of Port-au-Prince is the capital of Haiti. Supporting a population of almost a million, it has much to offer.

One of the famous places to visit in Port-au-Prince is the very busy and famous Iron Market where you can shop for almost anything at bargain prices. Other places worth visiting are the Museum of Haitian Art, the neo-classical cathedral, Defly Mansion and the Gingerbread houses.

Much of the city’s activity is centered around its Iron Market which remains full of various stalls offering a number of items ranging from handicrafts to fruits etc. Cathédrale de Port-au-Prince and Cathédrale de la Ste Trinité are a few of the places that cater to the country’s most famous artists and the The Musée d'Art Haïtien du College St Pierre has some of the most excellent collection of art. Santa Maria is also a worth site to view, a rusty anchor reputed to have been salvaged since Columbus’s time.

Some of the cities best dining spots can be found at hillside suburb of Pétionville. It has an exciting nightlife and offers a breather from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Another suburb that offers tranquil respite high up in the mountains is the Boutillier.

The park of Champs de Mars offers a grand view of the Presidential Palace and has the Statue of the Unknown Slave blowing a call to freedom. Some 45 miles to the north of Port-au-Prince, situated where the mountains meet the sea lies the town of Montrouis. It has a museum that contains the remains from the past of Haiti. The seaside resort of Moulin Sur Mer offers a fantastic escape; you can just lay back on the beach and enjoy the tropical sun or dive in the soothing calm waters. Various other activities like snorkeling, tennis, volleyball and pools are also available readily throughout the city. The restaurants at Moulin Sur Mer offer the finest cuisines and the beautiful sunset view while you dine out.

The Citadelle is a grand fortress that sits atop a mountain, almost a five hour drive up north overlooking the city of Cap Haitien. Built is the early 1800’s it was built by King Henri Christophe it gives some of the most breathtaking views and has also been called the Eight Wonder of the World by many.

Another popular destination up north of Port-au-Prince is Labadie. Catering to thousands of visitors every year, it offers some of the best water sport opportunities under the lush mountain shades.

Although plagued by political unrest and unstable economy, Haiti contains some of the most scenic landscapes and breathtaking views that will not let you forget it soon.

It is a fascinating country with a friendly people. There is much to see and do in Haiti and port-au-Prince is the best place to start your exploration from.

Although extremely poor, the people of the country are lively and the city is bustling with life. It’s an extraordinary country with a great ambiance and pleasant settings, offering a wide range of choices to the travelers.

While traveling Port-au-Prince travelers can find a number of attractions of their interest and many areas worth exploring as the capital of Haiti has some of the best in history and culture to offer.
