Things to do on Montserrat
Not your typical Caribbean vacation destination,
Montserrat is famous for its massive volcanic
eruption that occurred in 1995 causing roughly half of this tiny island
to be evacuated. Famous for being the green isle of the Caribbean,
today Montserrat is a popular destination for scientists in the region
especially those who are looking to study the Soufriere Hills Volcano.
The island is also a nice quiet getaway for those who are looking
for some secluded tranquil surroundings to escape to. Though tourism
is restricted to the northern half of the island, there are still
plenty of things to do in Montserrat.
One of the best things to do while you are here is to get an up
close and personal view of an active volcano. And while the Soufriere
Hills Volcano is not accessible, there are several excellent places
from where you can get some superb views of this volcano as well
as visit the comprehensive research center that has been set up
out here. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory is open weekdays for
adults as well as children and is located in Fleming’s. This
observatory monitors the Soufriere Hills Volcano as well as other
volcanic activity in the Caribbean. While in Montserrat you will
almost definitely feel some sort of volcanic activity while you
are here, be it in the form of a minor quake or a rockfall.
Montserrat is also a superb place to coming diving, with the water
conditions here pristine and home to a great variety of marine life.
Unknown to many as a great diving destination, mainly because of its
volcanic activity, Montserrat’s diving is still legendary. You
can go diving along the northern parts of the island, and because
of the lack of tourists you will find plenty of dive locations to
choose from. There is only one dive operator on Montserrat in Woodland,
which offers various diving packages, including night dives as well
as snorkeling and other courses. An underwater photography course
is also available out here.
