Saint Kitts and Nevis
The twin islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis are the ideal place for
a low-key and laidback vacation. Both gorgeous islands, St Kitts and
Nevis fulfill all the requirements for a tropical paradise. Here you
can find beautiful white sand beaches, posh resorts, tall palm trees
and colorful bars, making these islands an idyllic getaway for those
who want to escape from the more touristy areas of the Caribbean.
The oldest British colonies in the West Indies, Saint Kitts and
Nevis were first found by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Encompassing
a total land area of 269 sq km, Saint Kitts is the larger of the
two islands at 68 sq miles. Also more developed than Nevis, St Kitts
offers tourists more resorts and nightlife, but at the same time
is more toned than some other Caribbean islands. The transportation
infrastructure here is the best in the region and there are a number
of places to see and things to do that make this island definitely
worth visiting. The capital of Saint Kitts is Basseterre.
At just 93 sq km Nevis is more tranquil than St Kitts. Not much to
see here besides sugar plantations and a beautiful botanical garden,
Nevis offers tourists plenty of superb white sandy beaches and a number
of activities to enjoy such as horseback
riding and windsurfing. Just one main road encircles the entire
island, and it is easy to explore Nevis in a single day. The interior
of the island is densely forested with the picturesque Nevis Peak
often shrouded in a cloak of clouds. The capital of Nevis is Charlestown.
Peak tourist season on the island is from mid-December to mid-April.
However, a good time to visit is from November to early December
when the weather is equally good and the prices are more affordable
as well. A great pair of islands for history buffs to appreciate,
Saint Kitts and Nevis is also known for its lush green plantations,
which are superb to stay at, especially the ones that have been
turned into luxurious inns.
