Places to see in Saint Kitts and Nevis
There are a number of places to see on Saint
Kitts and Nevis, and to enjoy the complete island experience you
will need at least two weeks here. On Saint Kitts, Basseterre is the
main town on the island and is home to a majority of the population.
Here you will find plenty of restaurants, shops, bars and museums.
The National Museum in town is definitely worth a visit with its many
ancient and colonial artifacts and treasures. Carib Breweries is also
located in town and brews one of the most popular beers in the Caribbean,
Carib Beer. If you like you can also try and catch a game of cricket
at the lovely Warner Park Stadium.
Frigate Bay some 5 km southeast of Basseterre is a wonderful tranquil getaway.
Here you can find plenty of accommodations as well as some lovely
beaches. Along the northwestern coast of Saint Kitts is the only
UNESCO site in the entire Caribbean. The Brimstone Hill Fortress
National Park offers some excellent insight into the often violent
past of these former Caribbean colonies. A major British garrison,
much of the fortress was destroyed in a fire in 1867; however, in
the 1960’s major restoration work took place to revive this
fortress to its former glory and was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth
as a national park in 1985. The Citadel of the fortress is superb
to visit with views all the way to Sint
Eustatius and Sandy Point Town. Inside the citadel you will
also find a museum of old colonial artifacts including cannons,
swords and other military paraphernalia.
To the southeast of the island you will find some lovely beaches including
South Friar’s Beach, Sand Bank Bay and the famous Turtle Beach.
Also here is the all-inclusive Turtle Beach Bar & Grill. This
hotel/bar/apartment complex also offers some great water sports to
enjoy on its premises as well as some wonderful views of Nevis from
here.
Nevis is more low-key than St Kitts and for many is a wonderful
place to get married in. The island specializes in romantic secluded
wedding ceremonies with stunning plantations that have now been
converted into lush inns. Charlestown is the main town on the island
and can be easily explored on foot in a day. There are two museums
here too see as well as an old Jewish cemetery. The first hotel
built in the Caribbean in 1778, the Bath
House can be found here also, which ha now been converted in government
offices.
Pinney’s Beach, Windward Beach and Oualie Beach are 3 excellent
beaches to enjoy on Nevis. In southern Nevis, you can visit St John’s
Anglican Church, the Botanical Gardens and the Nevisian Heritage
Village as well. Here you will also find the Nevis horse racing
track, which is a favorite hangout among locals.
