Places to see in Saint Martin

Places to see in Saint Martin For a tiny island shared by two countries, there are a number of places to see in Saint Martin. This part of the island has a distinctly European feel to it and is a great vacation spot because it offers a little something for everyone. The capital Marigot is a wonderful place to explore with its first-rate restaurants and top notch duty free shopping. Things are inexpensive here and you will often see tourists making plenty of purchases as most items are tax free.

The Fort Louis is a great place to see in Saint Martin primarily because of the wonderful views it offers. Constructed in 1767 to protect the island from pirates, it is definitely worth coming here. The Saint Martin Archaeological Museum is also an excellent place to visit, as you will find many historical items on display here as well as ancient Arawak and Pre-Columbian artifacts. To get a real feel for Marigot, visit the Port La Royale Marina. Here you can sample some of the island’s best cuisine as well as all your favorite fast foods.

Once you have explored Marigot, head out to Saint Martin beautiful beaches, which offer some good sunbathing opportunities as well as swimming. Simpson Bay and the Baie Nettle, Baie Rogue, Baie aux Prunes, Friair’s Bay and Baie Longue are all great beaches to have some fun in the sun.

Visit Pic Paradis or Paradise Peak for some excellent hiking and wonderful views. There are a couple of trails to follow here, one of which is ideal for the serious hiker.

To sample some of the finest food on the island, head to Grand Case, a small beachside town. Often referred to as the gourmet capital of the Caribbean, this town has a plethora of places to eat ranging from road side stalls to expensive French gourmet restaurants. One of the best places to eat here is the ritzy Le Tastevin which serves foie gras and specializes in seafood.

Orient Beach and Oyster Pond also offer some great swimming and snorkeling opportunities as well as a variety of water sports. Both well developed areas you can find a number of all inclusive resorts and good restaurants in the area.
