Places to see in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
There are plenty of places to see in Saint
Vincent and the Grenadines. With 32 islands and cays to explore,
this island nation offers tourists and travelers many stunning sights
to behold. St Vincent is the largest and most populous island with
a majority of the Vincentians living here. A lush and verdant island,
the capital Kingstown is also situated on St Vincent. A busy bustling
city, Kingstown is buzzing with activity. The commercial center
of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, plenty of banks, shops, restaurants
and internet cafes can be found here. There are also a few accommodations
to be found in the city.
In Kingstown itself, there is not much to see except for two fortresses. Fort Charlotte sits north of the city with some panoramic views of Kingstown and the Grenadines, while Fort Duvernette Island sits just offshore from Villa Beach. The St Vincent Botanic Gardens is also worth a visit as it is the oldest botanical gardens in the western hemisphere. An oasis of calm and tranquility, here you can spot numerous native plants and in the aviary nearby, you can see some 500 endangered and rare St Vincent’s parrots, which is the national bird.
Bequia is the northernmost island in the Grenadines and is
also one of the tiniest at just 18 sq km in size. The most happening
place to be in the country, here you can find gorgeous beaches,
excellent nightlife, fine restaurants, top notch diving and some
great shopping opportunities. The main town on the island is Port
Elizabeth. Princess Margaret Beach, Friendship Bay, Petit Nevis
and Hope Bay are Bequia’s top beaches.
The privately owned Mustique Island is the ultimate getaway for
the rich and famous. Expect to rub shoulder with people like Tommy
Hilfiger and David Bowie who are often known to vacation here. Canouan
is another beautiful island to visit with its beautiful beaches
that offer some excellent swimming, snorkeling
and diving. Mayreau island lies west of the Tobago Cays, with
one of the most picture-perfect beaches in the Caribbean
found here. Saltwhistle Bay is a spectacular white sand beach with
calm clear blue waters.
Union Island, Palm Island and Petit Saint Vincent are also gorgeous
to see and explore. Each with their own unique take on a Caribbean
getaway, all three islands have much to offer.
Perhaps the best and most popular place to see in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has to be Tobago Cays, which are five small uninhabited islands surrounded by stunning coral reefs. A national park, these islands offer some amazing snorkeling and diving and where used as a set location for the filming of the blockbuster movie Pirates of the Caribbean.
