Getting Around Sint Eustatius
US citizens and most western nationals do not need a visa to enter
Sint Eustatius; however, a valid passport
and a return or onward ticket is required to visit the island. The
only airport on Statia is the small Franklin Delano Roosevelt Airport,
with the sole airline to fly here being Winair from Saint
Martin. There are no regular ferry services to Sint Eustatius
except for a few boats that stop here for the great diving. If you
plan on visiting Sint Eustatius by yacht, you will need to radio
in ahead of your arrival as there are lots of protected areas along
the coast. Additionally only 10 boats can anchor near the island
at one time.
As Statia is such a small island with only one main town located
here, there are no buses or public transportation available for visitors
and tourists to use. The best way to explore the island is by rental
car, with around 4 rental agencies located in Oranjestad.
Driving here is on the right side of
the road, but be careful while driving here as goats, cows and chickens
roam freely all over the island. Scooter rental are also on hand for
the single traveler.
If you like you can avail the services of a taxi, if you are on the
island for a short trip. There are only a handful of cabs that usually
sit outside the airport when flights arrive. If you like, you can
hire a taxi to give you an island tour which costs roughly US$ 40.
