Things to do in Sint Eustatius
One of the most popular things to in Sint
Eustatius has to be scuba diving. A diver’s paradise,
there are stunning coral reefs here to explore filled with sunken
shipwrecks, seahorses, octopus, stingrays, lobster, barracuda and
sharks. Home to a multitude of vibrant tropical fish, the diving
off Sint Eustatius is regarded as the best in the Caribbean.
The waters here are a crystal clear blue and with warm water temperatures
and not many other divers around, you will have plenty of places
to see and explore.
There are three dive shops in Oranjestad
which not only offer diving certification courses but night dives
and multi-dive packages as well. When diving in Sint Eustatius please
try and maintain the diving conditions here by taking pictures only
and not harming or touching the coral and marine life in any way.
In order to improve the diving conditions and offer some excellent
wreck dives, the island has recently sunk several ships off its coast.
The Charlie Brown was sunk here in 2003 to offer some great wreck
diving.
Hangover Reef on the southwestern end of the island is a wonderful
place to go reef diving, with a wide assortment of coral reefs found
here. Sponges, sea fans and other brightly colored coral can be
found along side numerous species of fish, sea turtles and lobsters.
For some superb deep diving head to Doobie’s Crack a large
crevice in the reef. Located in the northwest of Sint Eustatius,
this cleft is home to many large fish as well as black-tip sharks.
Hiking is another excellent activity in Sint Eustatius, with over 12 walking trials to enjoy all across the island. The most famous hiking trail here is the Quill, which is an extinct volcano. There are three trails up the Quill to follow each offering some great views. Mazinga, is Sint Eustatius’ highest point at 600 meters and offers some stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area.
