Places to see in Sint Maarten
Dutch Sint Maarten is a tiny area with
not many places to see or explore. The main town on this part of
the island is the capital Philipsburg, which offers some great shopping,
accommodations and gourmet restaurants. Most of the activity in
the capital takes place along Frontstreet, where you can find duty-free
shops, fancy boutiques, casinos and jewelry shops.
In town visit the small but interesting Sint Maarten Museum, which
exhibits much of the island’s history including Arawak pottery,
old artifacts and many historic documents and items. A few articles
from the sunken HMS Proselyte are also on display here.
A great place for the entire family is a visit to the Sint Maarten
Park. Actually a zoo, there are several animals and reptiles on display
out here including lizards and tarantulas. Though only a small zoo,
it is a fantastic place to bring the kids, who get the chance to see
many animals up close and personal as well as interact with a few
at the petting zoo.
While in town don’t forget to try a meal at one of the
best restaurants, the L’Escargot. Serving delicious French
cuisine, the L’Escargot offers its patrons delectable lunches
such as seafood crepes and gourmet dinners like crisp duck in a
banana and pineapple sauce. Every Friday night the restaurant has
a cabaret show along with dinner.
To head where all the action is visit Maho and Mullet Bay, where
casinos and ritzy shops are everywhere, while if you are in the mood
for a more tranquil getaway visit Cupecoy or Dawn Beach to lie back
and take in the gorgeous Caribbean sunshine.
